(This is a theoretical insight of my work in 1993)
Academically, I was interested in how to articulate the aesthetic expression of Tauhid, or infinite Oneness through video installation. Tauhid is central in Islamic cosmology, which can also be compared to cosmologies based on several religious and spiritual traditions around the world. Islamic cosmology is embedded in its visual tradition. Infinite Oneness is expressed through the use of several key formal principles such as:
> use of abstract & mathematical language of geometry, especially fractal abstraction.
> modular & cyclical
> simultaneity & non-linearity
> multiple-centers, multiple-viewpoints
> symmetry
> interconnectivity
> observer-user-audience centered
> engagement & immersion
My focus then was on the use of abstract & mathematical language of geometry, especially fractal abstraction. Time and space were compressed, repeated, expanded and divided into bigger or smaller fractions or units. Such geometry has also been refered to as the grammar of harmony that can be found as the underlying law governing all natural phenomena from quantum scale to the cosmic scale.
