The first word revealed to the Prophet Muhammad is "Iqra'" translated as
"Read" or "Proclaim". Many 'tafsir' or interpretations relate this to
acquiring knowledge. An open book is an invitation to knowledge. The
rehal is my personal index for my spiritual upbringing (my father used
to be an ustaz and a Quran teacher). The bowl with 8 lotus petals
relates to my encounter or dialogue with Zen Buddhism, whenever I
stopped-by few zen gardens in Fukuoka, Kyoto, Yamaguchi and Tokyo back in 2003.
It was a friendly dialogue, even intimate, as if meeting a nice person
at a strange place. It left a lasting and profound experience,
especially in relation to the transient nature of our 'identity'.
