JEJAK BUNYI...FESTIVAL MUZIK DUNIA, SARAWAK (TRACING THE SOUND...SARAWAK RAINFOREST WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL)

Performing at the seminal Sarawak Rainforest World Music Festival (the inaugural/1st. and the 2nd. edition), was surreal, spiritually humbling yet musically uplifting. It will be forever etched and hardwired in neural pathways. I was then, extremely lucky to be involved. I was in the main organizing committee for the inaugural or the 1st. edition, lead by Sarawak Tourism Board. The festival was held at the Sarawak Cultural Village. I represented the Dean of the Faculty of Applied & Creative Arts (which was roped in to provide mostly technical and human resource support). I remember working with this imported consultant/expert in World Music, a mat Saleh, Randy, from Canada if I'm not mistaken.

Electro-acoustic Group UNIMAS was invited to perform for in the 1st. edition, after the selection selection committee saw our performance at the Kuching Waterfront and video recording of our concert at UNIMAS. I was also invited to joint day workshop session with other string-based musicians from the other invited groups (from all over the world). That was another blast for me. To experience an improvised jamming session with some of the best and seasoned world music 'otai' was beyond words for me. EAG performed on the first day of the the days open concert. Performing on stage in an open space, surrounded by all the traditional houses, under the gaze of the majestic Mount Santubong, with clear night sky and stars, was very spiritual. I was also mesmerized by other talented world music performers from all over the world.

For the 2nd. edition, I was invited by Dr. Wan Zawawi to joint his small group to play the drums (gendang) and gongs section, as well as to provide the 'qasidah' prelude. 

My current Kebun Bunyi, was mostly prompted by this special encounter with World Music.

JEJAK BUNYI...TINGKAP 94 DI UiTM (TRACING THE SOUND...WINDOW 94 AT UiTM)

The one year window at the Department of Fine Art, School of Art & Design, UiTM in 1993/4 where I taught for just about a year, is short but deeply substantial. I came back from my BFA and MFA stint in the USA to a different UiTM. These two picture represent one fragment of the experience. The last memorable project I was involved in was XpresiXperimental, a multi-dimensional and cross-disciplines concert by students cutting across all the departments at the School. The Dean then, Dr. Tamyes, was one of the reasons the project was approved. It would be a different story if it was someone else on the Dean's chair. This "Malam Puisi" was a tame one compared to Xpresi Xperimental.

JEJAK BUNYI...4 PERSEPSI (TRACING THE SOUND...4 PERCEPTIONS)

1989, "4 Perceptions - Poetry, Song & Dance" at the Creative Center, National Art Gallery. Such cross-disciplines ventures are not new, they have been around since the 70s, including at UiTM. Pak Pin, if I'm not mistaken did a diploma project on performance (as told by Nasir Baharuddin), Amron called the spirit of Hang Tuah for his performance at the UiTM's Menara, there were yearly (then biennally) experimental sound-visual performances at UiTM like Ledak Lintar and Kom-X. Zainal Alam Kadir performed in Shukri Elias (Lennon's) light sculpture in Kom-X (1986).
1989, "4 Perceptions - Poetry, Song & Dance" with Fauzin's painting as the backdrop. The song and lyric were inspired by his "Alam Fana" series. Ladin Nuawi performed his poem, while sifu Krishen Jit, Ismail Zain, Khoo Kay Kim and Ramli Ibrahim shared their thoughts about young people in the arts during an accompanying mini seminar. The indefatigable Normah Nordin was the producer.
1989, "4 Perceptions - Poetry, Song & Dance" with Eddin Khoo, Rafiq, Marion D'Cruz, Dida, Piggy Tan, Hasan & Markizah, Dida Malik, Mat Noor, Iryanda Mulya, Wak Mustaqim, Najib Nor, Taufik, Fauzin, ? Adnan. Piggy, Dida and Marion interpreted Mat Noor's and Fauzin's works thru dance and movement. Rafiq, Eddin, Hassan & Markizah churned out soulful social-commentaries acoustic numbers. Najib, our production design, fashion and costume extraordinaire, was the driving force with a Poppey sense of humour.

Rahmat Haron said, "so glad that now i've lot more references of the past happening...agreeable cross-inter disciplines art practices are not new..true enough...in whatever forms in this age of reproductions things are not so new...but at least there must be sumthin out of its new representations or just a mere repetition of the past...i'm interested in that tat sumthin...the so called unknown"

    "Hilang pupus ditutupi malam, yang hening. Akan datang sebuah mimpi, yang pastinya tiada bertepi. Pabila muncul mentari pagi, mimpi kan pergi." Mak oiii.....jiwang negatif dan putus harap abih.
    Masa ni aku dalam era rebel, apatah lagi tak dapat masuk UiTM. Kena mintak dua kali.

  • Hasnul Saidon Fik & Pojin, tu senikata lagu based on fana dan daun kering besor yang hang rajin sgt kutip buat painting daun reput dulu. Gambar poyo di atas ni diambil masa tengah soul out senikata tu. Memang ada angan-angan nak buat album dan jadi famous,  tapi sebab tak tahan tulah dan geli, tersasar ke fine art. Rupanya dunia fine art lagi banyak geli nya. Sebelum tu, nak jadi doktor, lepas tu nak jadi pemain bolasepak, macam Azizol Abu Hanifah, kawan sekolah dulu. Lepas tu, nak jadi arkitek. Walaupun takda yang menjadi, segala yang 'nak' tu lah yg dah bawak aku mengembara merentas merata. Tapi memanglah tak jadi, sebab asyik 'nak' je. Sampai bila-bila 'nak' je, tak pernahnya 'jadi'. Rupa-rupanya semua tu membawa aku pada zikir 'jadi', dari surah Yasin tu.

    So now, zikirkan 'jadi', jadilah.
