1989, istana backdrop for "Cindai".
1989, the istana backdrop for "Cindai". Pak Mail designed this with his computer; we constructed the set with our own bare hands.
1989, hanging plowers for the 'istana'. Nordin Hassan was also known for his inclination towards things 'gedik' (his reading of the Malay visual culture).
1989, putting finishing touch for the 'makam'. Ahmad Yatim used to hang out with us while practicing his lines for the 'makam' scene. He was not happy with our polystrene tomb-stone though (he had to pick one up) - too light and terrible for him to make it appear heavy.
1989, playing around with Fauzin, putting on the 'judges masks' for "Cindai". Nordin Hassan was a master of symbolism and visual metaphor.
1989, constructing set for "Cindai" written and directed by the eminent Nordin Hassan, set designed by our mahaguru Ismail Zain (Pak Mail), using his Macintosh computer. Our makeshift studio was actually an extended side of Kak Yong's and Abang Taha's house at Medan Damansara. That's how much both of them loved us (until now I hope). Pak Mail belanja us roti canai mamak after seeing how 'daif' we were in actualizing his design. He was nevertheless, pleased and proud of us. I miss Pak Mail.
